Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1875 - 1911) - Lithuanian artist and composer, the initiator of professional music in Lithuania, whose art transcended the narrow limits of national culture.

The art, music and literary works of M.K.Ciurlionis reflected trends in philosophy, religious theory and art which existed at the juncture of the 19th - 20th centuries,
even to the present time. His art, not easily squeezed into one type or classification, is acknowledged as Lithuania's most significant contribution to the world's culture, and is mentioned among that of such celebrated modernists as Wassily Kandinsky, Edvard Munch, Odilon Redon, Frantisek Kupka and others.

Among those in the art world who valued the work of M.K. Ciurlionis were Isadora Duncan, Romenas Rolanas and Olivier Messiaen.
